ROUTES OF THE RAINFOREST
A deep connection with the jungle, the culture, and the Maya spirit
Explore the Ancient Ruins of Coba
The ancient Mayan city of Coba was once a thriving urban center in the northeastern Yucatan. Grand pyramids, plazas, temples, and structures remained hidden beneath dense jungle vegetation for over a thousand years, only uncovered in recent decades by archaeologists. The ruins of Coba offer an exceptional setting to discover the Maya civilization along with the surrounding wildlife, where rich vegetation dominates the landscape, partially revealed structures rise among roots and vines, abundant tropical birds can be spotted, and a vast central zone is explored by bicycle.
Cobá developed around a network of small lakes that supported agriculture and helped it become one of the most significant pre-Hispanic cities of the Classic period in northern Yucatán (200–800 AD). The site is composed of five primary architectural groups spread across the lakes and connected through an extensive system of ancient white roads.
The community of Punta Laguna offers eco-tourism experiences focused on protecting both their traditions and the natural environment. This remarkable area features stunning lagoons, deep cenotes filled with crystal-clear water, and a semi-deciduous forest with towering trees reaching up to 100 feet. A rich diversity of flora and fauna inhabits this ecosystem, and visitors are guided by local residents through jungle paths in search of various species of birds, mammals, orchids, insects, and bromeliads. The most notable inhabitants are the spider monkeys, with whom the community has built a unique bond over the past two decades, becoming highly skilled in observing their behavior and even recognizing individual members of the troop. You will also canoe across the tranquil waters of the lagoon and experience an exciting zipline ride over it.
As part of this tour, we also visit a family-owned cenote, perfect for swimming, refreshing, and for those who wish, jumping or diving. In the nearby village of Tres Reyes, we stop for lunch at a local family’s home, where they share their gardens, medicinal plants, and prepare a delicious traditional meal made with fresh local
